KUMITE

Advancing in shibari

What is kumite

Kumite is an opportunity for TWO and THREE students to learn about selected topics, train and exchange with each other. It is designed for riggers and models to learn.

While primarily designed for our TWO and THREE students, Kumite is also open to those outside the program who wish to explore shibari in greater depth (please check the prerequisites below).

CONTENT

  • Opening round: Share potential problems, requests & topics to cover.

  • Technique training, technique review and kata.

  • Selected topic (varying from rope techniques, body handling, interaction & expression, problem solving, rope handling, philosophy, patterns, safety, body movement, aesthetics, …).

  • Collective practice round: Implementing the topic into a rope session / practice session in a guided setting.

  • Student exchange.

  • Open practice round under supervision.

  • Closing round: Round table where you can exchange experiences and ask for feedback.

It is very important to us that you follow the path that is right for you. As a kumite student, you can suggest topics to cover during kumite.

MINIMAL PREREQUISITES

  • Rigger and model must have followed the TWO and/or THREE course at Studio TIEY

  • While primarily designed for our TWO and THREE students, Kumite is also open to those outside the program who wish to explore shibari in greater depth. If you meet the minimal technical prerequisites for the ONE and TWO courses, we recommend first attending the Kannuki Shibari workshop, where the Yagami style two rope TK is thoroughly studied. Upon completion, you will be ready to embark on Kumite.

The theoretical background on which Kumite is based, is covered in the ZERO, ONE, TWO & THREE courses of Studio TIEY

EQUIPMENT

Clothing

  • Please wear something that you feel comfortable tying in / getting tied in, considering both movement and temperature.

  • For models, we prefer fitted clothing similar to yoga attire.

  • We advise against restrictive clothing such as jeans, underwire bras, jewelry, etc.

  • We practice barefoot or with socks.

Rope

You will need a minimum of 10 jute or hemp ropes, preferably 5-6mm in diameter and 7-8m in length. Suitable rope can also be purchased at the studio (please contact us beforehand).

Instructor

Kumite is given by Peter Etheros. He is a passionate teacher who loves to share and coach other human beings about shibari and other life related matters :-)

His TIEY courses are designed, based on his own experience and with the use of the Yagami-ryu framework. He is the founder of Studio TIEY and certified Yagami-ryu instructor since 2020

Language

The course is given in Dutch if all attendees feel comfortable. In all other cases, the course is given in English. One-on-one corrections can also be given in French or German.
