Info about Bamboo
What Type of Bamboo?
There are many types of bamboo available on the market. At Studio TIEY, we use a mix of Moso, Thali, and Guadua. Java bamboo is also a great option.
Which Bamboo to Choose?
We always recommend visiting a physical store rather than ordering online. This allows you to handpick the best bamboo. Look for:
A thick wall
A surface that is even and smooth
No cracks
A visually pleasing bamboo
What Length?
The length of bamboo is a matter of personal preference, but we wouldn’t recommend anything under 200cm. At Studio TIEY, our bamboos average around 240cm. We cut them by hand using an iron saw with fine teeth to avoid splintering.
How to Prepare Your Bamboo?
Cut to length using a fine-toothed saw.
Sand all the nodes to remove sharp edges.
Optionally, sand the entire surface if needed, although we prefer selecting naturally smooth pieces.
Wipe clean with a damp cloth to remove dust.
Let the bamboo dry completely.
Finish with a light coat of jojoba oil.
Why Does Bamboo Crack?
Bamboo is sensitive to indoor climate changes—like temperature shifts, direct sunlight, heating, or humidity. When these factors fluctuate, your bamboo may crack. Some bamboo poles are very stable, while others are more reactive. In our experience, the longer the chambers, the more susceptible they are to indoor climate changes. How the bamboo was dried initially makes a big difference, but as far as we know, there's no reliable way to check for that afterward.
