Navigating Studio TIEY’s Courses & Workshops
As Studio TIEY continues to grow, we understand that it’s becoming more challenging to navigate through the many courses and workshops we offer. To make things easier, here’s a breakdown of our different teaching formats:
COURSES
Our ZERO, ONE, TWO, and THREE courses provide a structured, chronological approach to fundamental shibari techniques and principles. Rooted in the Yagami-ryu framework, these courses are not just for beginners—they emphasize both technical skills and underlying principles rather than mechanical, step-by-step execution. Beyond tying, they also cover rope handling, communication, body control, positioning, and movement for both model and rigger. Additionally, we explore Yagami style and other styles from a philosophical perspective, questioning intentions and exploring different paths.
FOR WHO?
Ideal for those who:
Are new to shibari
Have experience but maintain a beginner’s mindset
Appreciate a structured, “A to Z” learning experience
Are interested in the Yagami-ryu approach
Want to learn beyond just tying techniques
KUMITE
Kumite is an opportunity for TWO and THREE students to learn about selected topics, train and exchange with each other. It is designed for riggers and models to learn. We maintain a mix of experimental exercises and training the learnt techniques, covering different topics each session.
FOR WHO?
While primarily designed for our TWO and THREE students, Kumite is also open to those outside the program who:
Want to explore shibari in greater depth
Meet the minimum prerequisites
Workshops
We regularly host workshops with internationally renowned instructors from diverse backgrounds. These workshops are great opportunities to have a taste of a different flavor. Since content, teaching styles and prerequisites vary widely, we encourage you to carefully read each workshop’s description for details. If you have any questions or concerns, we’re happy to assist you.

Studio TIEY LeARNING philosophy
During your entire journey, we aim to keep the focus on:
The journey, not the destination.
Be mindful, enjoy many moments in the “here and now”.The “shoshin” beginners mindset.
“Shoshin” is a word from Zen Buddhism meaning "beginner's mind."
It refers to having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions when studying a subject, even when studying at an advanced level, just as a beginner would.
